“Short and sweet to the soul is all that I intend”

Song of the week is “We used to be friends” by the Dandy Warhols. Why?It is the theme song to my absolutely favorite TV show, Veronica Mars.

In about three hours, I will have completely finished watching the last episode of Veronica Mars ever. (I got Rachel season 3 for Christmas, and we’ve practically have been watching them non-stop)

I think I may cry… THEY DISCONTINUED MY FAVORITE SHOW! (waa!) So… Veronica, I will miss you.

*sniff*

Ok… off of that. Christmas was great. I got some neat things from my wonderful family.

The highlights were

1) my dad got me my Eurrail passes (that will allow me to travel to many different countries while in Germany)

eurail-promo.jpg

2) my dad also got me a portable hard drive that doesn’t need a plug (yay!) so I can get rid of my larger one. (insert happy dance here)

lacie_rugged_2.jpg

3) Jonny got me a gift card to the wonderful world of Target (yay!) Now I can get my last few things I need for traveling before I go to Germany!

4) My sister, Rachel, says that one of my favorite movies “Everything is Illuminated” is in the mail: (I assume movies are going to become my little version of “America” when I go to Germany - the one thing I have where I have some sort of familiarity. Makes sense?)

everything-is-illuminated-poster-0.jpg

5) My amazing cousins Dave and Trina got me a piece of artwork from one of their favorite artists (yay!)

and it came with a postcard of this print… which is going to accompany me to germany:

I feel sufficiently spoiled with some of my favorite things.

But really the best part of this time of year is still the family… especially my nephews:

img_5531.JPG

Oh … and my 1.5 year old nephew decided to join the iPod generation:

img_5518.JPG

He’s very hip.

Last, but not least, my dad and I found the neatest wine ever:

img_5514.JPG

Yes… it’s Holy Cow wine… complete with a cow wearing a halo. Probably will be nasty, but at least it’s got a cow on it.

Ok time to finish off Veronica Mars!

He did it for me. :)

I’m enjoying my siblings an nephews a lot, if I didn’t make it clear enough from the photos.

That’s all.

“old teenage hopes are alive at your door”

This song makes me happy.

The video to it makes me even happier.

Packing makes me unhappy.

Very unhappy.

And yes, this means that I’m graduated.

Am I ok?

I kind of go through stages.

A third of the time I’m excited to start a new part of life, to see my nephews and family, to go to Germany.

A third of the time I pretend that nothing is different - I’m in denial.

And a third of the time I break down into uncontrollable tears. This third stage is very unpredictable, unstable and irrational. I think the funniest breakdown was when I started crying when it was time to pack my teddy bear away:

img_5510.JPG

Don’t laugh at me. I’ve slept with this thing since valentine’s day of my Junior year of highschool. I’m going to miss it. :)

On top of this, I kind of wish I could entertain the idea of going to graduation or my senior show… or some kind of closure. I don’t feel… done. It’s like I’m being prematurely ripped from something I haven’t become bored with yet.

But I’m going to get over it. I promised myself that much.

I have some pictures from the last week.

In drawing class we had free time, and Naomi and I were feeling like our usual goofball selves. So we decided to make tuna fish sandwiches.

If that’s not random enough, we kept on commenting on how the sandwich would be so much better if the bread was toasted.

What do we do?

img_5489.JPG

Yes, that is the kiln.

WE tried the top first, but then we realized that we were possibly getting fumes. Then Nic discovered this neat method:

img_5499.JPG

OH boy.

img_5505.JPG

Yes…. tasty.

I made a new friend, and my new friend made me a painting :)

img_5507.JPG

He is a neat guy. His name is Josh.

I’ve been making lots of art exchanges recently, but I’ve also stopped documenting them. David Lammers (an engineering and art major who works a lot with metal) switched one of my ceramic hearts for a neat turtle. :) I’ll post pictures of that in a year when I finally retrieve my stuff from Sioux Center. (WAA!)

Besides all that, I’ve been saying a lot of goodbyes.

img_5506.JPG

I’m sick of saying goodbye. No more. If you still haven’t said goodbye, stay away from me, ok? (haha… just kidding… I think?)

On a much happier note… even though it still doesn’t feel like christmas time for me, I am going to share something I shared last year - it’s the neatest thing in the whole world. Well, at least it makes me smile :)

Well that was a boring post. I’m going to shut up before it gets worse… or before I go through another crying fit ;)

I’ll post soon! Have a wonderful weekend, everybody.

“Lonelily looking for someone to hold”

Brace yourself, this post is going to be long. Very long. Lots of pictures… and long. So long, that I am going to have two songs of the week.

The first (I hope it’s working at least…) is my favorite Damien Rice song, “Lonelily”… it’s one of those rare songs where I was immediately in love with the first listening, so I hope it’s the same for all of you. :)

The second is “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry. I’m posting it for a friend. This friend and I listened to it over seven times today. You know who you are ;)

Both of them have to do with someone leaving or loneliness at least…Which.. I guess, is the exact opposite of the theme of this post this week.I actually had a brilliantly wonderful non-lonely kind of week. Kind of. I’m still having mixed emotions, but this is the best week I could’ve thought of to have.

First of all, I know you all want to see my cow (moo!) sculpture that was mentioned in the previous post. Here you go (these two pictures were taken by Professor Sheesley):

cow1.jpg

and here is my cow with the rest of the bunch:

groupside2.jpg

Obviously, the cow is superior. (Too bad it’s impossible to type with a sarcastic sneer…)

I’ve been up to a lot of mischief the past few days. Let’s just say, when it comes to awkward moments I am THE QUEEN of creating them :)

I live for awkwardness. My life is one big awkward moment. Oh dear.

Anyways, Thursday night was fun with Amanda and Jason night - as well as my sister. Here are some pictures of that great night:

img_5470.JPG

Isn’t my sister attractive? (good thing she doesn’t read this blog that often, or else I may get a yelling at!!! :) )

And here is the most absolutely cheesy picture of the night:

img_5474.JPG

It was a funny crazy night… and no, I don’t care to elaborate. :)

Friday I got some quality Jeremiah time.

We somehow acquired some free acorn squash, so we made them together. img_5482.JPG

We watched a couple episodes of one of the best TV shows out there - THE OFFICE

office_season_two.jpg

and then we made some yummy brownies. Food, The Office AND Jerry? That is definitely worth an embarrasing picture:

img_5487.JPG

hee hee.

Saturday was almost entirely spent finishing off a lot of art stuff.

I updated my portfolio website (Which my genius brother-in-law ANDREW needs to fix the link to at the top of this page? It mysteriously stopped working? Can you handle that, Andrew?)

HOWEVER you can SEE IT HERE!

It has a lot of new stuff - I’ll point out some of the highlights:

Naomi and I were assigned to do a collaborative drawing together. Here is out finished products:

img_1490.JPGimg_1487.JPG

It’s awesome because we both have extremely different drawing styles, yet we somehow managed to marry them together in these drawings. Hooray!

And Naomi is fun to work with.

If you couldn’t tell the right picture is celery.

It looked ok the first time we worked with it - but by the second week of drawing it, it was less than pleasing. We once decided to freeze it… but it only made it worse. By the end the celery looked (and smelled) like this:

img_9221.JPG

We decided to bury it:

img_9224.JPG

and I got to do the honors of kicking snow on it:

img_9225.JPG

and Naomi got to wash the nasty pot we kept it in :)

img_9228.JPG

After this, Naomi and did an ART TRADE!

(yay!)

I had made a heart teapot (I call it “pour your heart out”)

img_1405.JPG

Naomi had an awesome vase. We were both jealous of what the other had, so we did a little trade:

img_9218.JPG

I’m getting really good at this whole trading thing :)

img_9219.JPG

And us with our new art! (Squeal!)

We totally took these photos by ourself :)

img_9220.JPG

If you look at my art website, I have a few more of my ceramics art that I have created. I need to retake some pictures, so there will be more later! :)

Ok I’m finally running out of stuff to talk about.

Except there is a painting that I just realized I haven’t publicly posted until now. My cousins Dave and Trina (and not counting Dordt students or professos) - have been the only people I allowed a sneak peek. They should feel special :)

Here it is:

(By the way - it’s name changes between “Shame”, “Remorse”, “Isolated” and “Regret” every five minutes. Grr… I hate naming art… and I also hate when people write “Untitled”.)

img_1467.JPG

Keep in mind that this painting is 4.5 feet tall and 3.5 feet wide. I really actually love how it turned out. Let me know what all of you think!

Ok I have lots to get back to doing… like going to sleep :)

I hope you are all having a good week.

Mom - I’m sorry if I haven’t called you for… a long time. :( I will soon.

Family in general: I CAN’T wait to see you next week!!! I’ll be home soon!

Dordt friends: This is your last chance to hang with me! Don’t blow it :)

Chow!

“Sweetness fills the air”

I was on my way home to my dorm from Connect-The-Dots, when someone got on the Piano and started playing my favorite Christmas hymn, “Lo, How a Rose Er Blooming”.

Something about being at school makes me forget what it used to be like during the holidays with my siblings and parents. I forget what it’s like to…

fight with my siblings over whose “baby’s first Christmas” ornament gets the premium spot on the tree

to have serious games of Settlers of Catan at my sister’s house

to sit in church while the organ’s Christmas music invades the atmosphere

or to sneak into the living room with my siblings while my parents were out to peek into all the presents. (Oh- mom and dad, if you are reading this… I blame Sarah. Just ask Jonny and Rachel :-P)

Something about hearing this song makes me remember… even if only for a moment.

Lucky us, Sufjan Stevens just happens to have a beautiful piano version of this song for your listening pleasure.
Well I have one thing to talk about -

Connect - The -Dots!

Basically it was an art night where the Senior Sem class brought every form of art possible to the campus center to allow anyone to explore.

Mary, Mal and I ran a painting booth:

img_1774.JPG

Dave, of course, did ceramics:

img_1767.JPG

There was also video editing, drawing, metal working, graphic design…

Printmaking:

art_005.jpg

And Professor Sheesley showed us his mad skills with ice sculpting:

img_1775.JPG

art_026.jpg

He even made me a cow! (well, I guess I kind of made him make me a cow)

Unfortunately, this is the only picture I have of it as of now… this is David trying to glue it’s legs back on by using a torch :)

art_032.jpg

It was a really good night… and I hope that the people who came enjoyed it as much as I did.

Off topic once again…

In a week I will be done with college.

I… don’t know what to think.

I have grown attached to the most unexpected people in the past few months, and unattached to the people I was closest to.

Maybe because I’ve been too involved with art…

I can honestly say the things I am most attached to… are pretty much anything that has to do with the art department.

My heart really hurts.

:-/

I don’t feel like talking about it, but I could use prayer?

I have so much work left to do tonight, and I’m not going to bed anytime soon…. so I better get moving on my homework. It’s not even that I’m lazy or a procrastinator… I’m just busy. Emotions are starting to get in the way… a bit.

But I’ll be alright.

Have a good week, everybody. :)
Diane
