“Tonight we can truly say, ‘Together we’re invincible’…”
I figured that it’s about time that I quoted MUSE… it’s only my favorite band.
Invincible is one of their softest songs… I doubt most of my audience would appreciate hardcore MUSE. But if you don’t mind a bit of heavier metal… check them out-> they are nothing short of AMAZING.
Anyways, mom wants an update. (BTW – I’ll call you tomorrow, mom (sunday))…
Wow I haven’t updated in a long time. Well here’s the skinny:
* Two Fridays ago, Laura and I went out to eat in LeMars. It was yum.
* Then the next day I had woke up really early and served at a soup kitchen. I love how friendly people are there and I enjoyed it. I wish I had the opportunity to go more often.
* Then Amanda, Jason and I hung out the rest of the evening – going shopping, watching movies, and went to a Dordt dance. All of which were tons fun.
Then was a week of lots of homework.
I MADE MY FIRST ANIMATION EVER!!! I’m somewhat proud of it, SO YOU MUST CLICK HERE AND WATCH IT!
*Disclaimer: the language is taken directly from Edgar Allen Poe’s Tell Tale Heart… I didn’t write this, he did.
Valentine’s day was fun.
First Amanda and Jason decided to fill my room up with balloons. Crazy kids.
Me, Laura and Rachel had an Anti-Valentine’s Day party.
And we made balloon boyfriends: (it’s tradition now… we did it last year too)
Unfortunately, I had to pop most of the balloons that Amanda and Jason gave me… I
think my roommates were getting annoyed of them.
Then we played sappy music, did the Macerena and the Electric Slide, and ate mass quantities of brownie and cookie dough ice cream.
Or in otherwords, we made being single look like a whole lot of fun.
Valentine’s night, I caught a really nasty cold – one so bad that I skipped classes all thursday and friday. I pretty much slept, ate, watched fresh prince and that 70’s show re-runs, woke laura up in the middle of the night with my odd hacking and coughing, and
felt miserable the whole weekend.
The only time I seemed to get out of the room was for the two hockey games – and that’s only because these were the last two home games.
However, I am still alive… and have made it through yet another tough week of schooling. Honestly, not too many exciting things happen during the weekend.
Tuesday I got my hair cut and died. Now I look a lot like Rachel. Next person to mix us up gets punched (urg…)
Wednesday was Rachel’s Birthday, and I cooked dinner for her. It was yummy. Rachel was spoiled on her birthday, which is good.
Friday was also fun. Hung out with Amanda for a while, then Mallory, Chad, Eric and I went to HuHot – a mongolian restaraunt. Given the Mongolian Grill in Tacoma tastes better and is cheaper, HuHot is a lot like it… just less authentic and more commercialized.
Maybe mom and dad would like to go(?) when you come out to visit for Rachel’s graduation?
Anyways… Saturday I woke up and immediately headed for the Art department.
I don’t know how many of you tried walking outside today, but it was pretty much just sliding on a sheet of ice. I’m shocked that I didn’t fall – but it was trecherous.
This painting:
turned into this:
I think this piece might be finished. We’ll see what VanGeest says.
Also, I started my large-scale painting.
It’s huge… but I have plans. The whole first layer was painted with my feet. No particular reason, it just looked like fun… and believe me, it was)
And then I went to the last basketball game of the season – ironically against our rival school, Northwestern. We lost, it was sad, and I was shocked by Northwestern’s immaturity. I bet Dordt students would’ve been just as immature had we won, but honestly – doesn’t the word “Christian” mean anything to anyone anymore?
Then I did more art, and headed over to Amanda’s room and watched potentially the most rediculous movie ever… “Snakes on a Plane”
It really needs to be advertised as a comedy – I’m pretty sure I was laughing the whole time I watched it. It’s just… rediculous. Absolutely absurd.
And now I’m here… and I’m tired. I hope this satisfied you for a while, mom.
Have a great week, y’all!

I promised my mom I would post before she heads off to Jamaica. I’m jealous… but I guess I can’t complain too much. It did hit 13 degrees fahrenheit today. (that’s warm)
Welp I’ve been doing art… (what’s new?)
Here are my two most recent paintings. If you don’t know modern art very well you’ll probably hate these… if you do you probably would like them better.
THESE ARE BOTH UNFINISHED (I am going to work on them the whole semester… meaning they won’t be done until May, but you can see the process it took for me to get there.)
I’ll give you a hint how to look at the first one: if the painting was 3-d, what part of it would be closest to you? Why?

Here’s the next one:
Look up the Abstract Expressionists if you want to know where I got my inspiration.
I also got to learn how to do Batik during Non-Western art history class – a way that Africans dye patterns into their clothing, using melted wax. Here’s what I came up with:
I am also learning how to do flash animation, and I have a few to show once I learn to post them on this site. All i have to say is, get ready for something pretty sweet.
Finally, east campus is having an event. I made posters. I hate valentines day, so I put in little effort – But I do think that they look nice:
Finally – If you remember the art sale we had semester, I had thought that I didn’t sell anything. Well, I guess I did. I was really surprised when professor van geest handed me an envelope of money this week. Apparently someone bought this print:
It’s weird to think that someone probably has my art hanging around their house.
Anyways, Art is all that I’ve been doing recently.
This weekend is very eventful: tonight I go on a date with Laura, tomorrow I’ll be working in a homeless shelter all morning, and then hanging out with Amanda and Jason all evening.
Mom and Dad, have a good trip! Stay safe!
Everybody else out there as well!
Love ya,

Josh gave me this band. Click here to hear the song. It’s Teitur, he’s from an English island. It’s good. It’s sounds kind of like an odd mix of… Damien Rice, Bebo Norman, Colin Hay, and occasionally Arcade Fire or the Fray. Yes, check them out. All of them, but especially Teitur this week.
Anyways, my life in the past week. All I really have to say for Monday-Friday afternoon was basically meeting after class after working out after cooking after sleeping after worship after homework. Not much time for anything out of the ordinary.
Don’t believe me?
This is my wall calendar that holds only my appointments – not homework:
Yes, so feel bad for me.
On friday afternoon, I saw Rachel off for her first date with Josh. They hate this picture, but I’m gonna put it up anyways:
Afterwards, I was kidnapped by Jason and Amanda on Friday and we went to Blue Mountain.

It was pretty good. We had crocodile. Yes, I ate crocodile. It tastes kind of like a rubbery version of chicken. Anyways, I do believe that is the first time I’ve ever said the words “i need to go pick crocodile out of my teeth”. I was amazed.
This is the crocodile:
We had a really nice waiter… more about that if you come talk to me in person.
Well, Amanda and I matched, so we took pictures. Yes – here they are:
Anyways. Saturday I got some work done actually.
This is my very first time ever doing 3-D artwork, and my sculpture is going pretty well.
THIS IS UNFINISHED: this sculpture has yet to be fired (twice) so it will shrink and change colors eventually. But this is the start:
I’m very excited to finish this.
And I also started a painting in the style of Hans Hoffman – an abstract expressionist who did mass studies on color and space.
So keep your eyes open for images of that… it will take a while before I am confident posting images of that painting: it’s my very first origional painting that completely excludes recognizable subject matter.
Going completely abstract is a lot harder than it looks, believe me.
Here is a piece by Hans Hoffman so you know what I am talking about (I DIDN’T PAINT THIS… but I wish I did
)

After the massive amounts of artwork (I am thinking about changing my address to the art department…)
Amanda and Jason came over and cooked for me, and we sat on couches being lazy useless blobs and watching episode after episode of Veronica Mars. Golly that’s a good show.
It seems like every person Rachel and I have shown a few episodes to has become addicted. Contact me if you too want an unhealthy addiction to the greatest TV show ever created.
Welp now it’s superbowl sunday. I was rooting for the bears. Not because I’m a huge football fan, but because laura was rooting for the colts and I wanted to laugh at her when the bears killed them.
Too bad things don’t seem to ever go my way
Here’s a picture of Peyton Manning, just for you, Laura.
Ok Laura, I get it. You win.
Welp, it’s time for me to prepare for yet another completely insanely and gloriously busy week. I hope all of you are doing well…
