…many enter, few come out the same

“What hurts the most is being so close and having so much to say, but then watching you walk away…not seeing that loving you is what I was trying to do”

I quoted a country song!!! HAH!

This is actually on my list of favorite songs right now… odd. Yes. Because of the content, not the style.

I made a wonderful discovery today – fresh carrots make me hiccup. Really badly. I was trying to photograph my artwork and it didn’t go so wonderfully.

I got critiqued in painting today. My teacher seems to think I have a lot of potential and said lots of good things. I needed a boost, so this came in perfect timing.

I absolutely love to paint, and I’m hoping to take more painting classes in the future.

Here is my “Pipe” series all together, from oldest to newest.

I had some rules on what colors I was allowed to use, but I very much enjoyed making these. Sorry that the pictures aren’t the best. I’m too lazy to try and spend time to figure out my hiccups.

Wow. Two posts in one day. OK i have an assignment due in an hour that needs to get done.

Have a good day…. again.

I came to a very sad realization today…

I am going to be spending more on art this semester than food.

Schieze.

Um. When’s payday?

Ok. I know you all want pictures. Well, I have a virtual chia pet on my computer. If I don’t water it every day it dies, but it grows every other day.
Well, this has got to be the longest I’ve ever kept my chia pet alive. Here is the proof:

The change is very subtle. I’ll keep everybody updated. (hee hee)

OH! ONE MORE THING!
I’m soo jealous of my oldest sister’s family’s website. Check it out!!! Those cows are beautiful :) -> http://www.flanaganclan.net/

For those who don’t know, cows are my favorite animal and I have 100 personal jokes about them. Yeah. I’m odd.

LOVE YOU GUYS!

“I’m gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have and cannonball into the water…”

Oh man am I enjoying life right now. I am the perfect amount of busy and entertained.

First of all (and most importantly), I kicked Laura in the butt (for a second time) with the game Trivial Pursuit.

Yeah, I know. I’m so proud that I know a lot of useless knowledge, like which state started a “senior shuffling” competition (florida) and something about the “Ewoks” in the Return of the Jedi. I know. Too bad this knowledge isn’t good for much.

Beyond that, I painted two paintings. The first one is my first attempt ever for painting for a class. Therefore, it’s not so wonderful: (assigment was only to use 1 color and black and white to paint the object)
Picture 11.png

The second one was a bit more successful (Assignment was to paint using analogous colors (right next to each other in the color wheel) and black and white):

Picture 13.png

Teacher says I like to paint very “juicy” … meaning lots of paint. (If you click on the pictures, you will see a closer view of what she means.)

Yes, I do have a lot to learn when it comes to painting, but these are the very humble beginnings.

Anyways, this weekend was fun. Laura and I ended up going to Sioux Falls for a shopping date. I got a ring for very cheap that makes me smile because it has so many beautiful colors in it:

MyRing.jpeg

And the colors seem brighter and sparklier in real life. Sigh.

I had plenty of trouble finding out what finger to put it on so that guys don’t think I’m engaged. I admit- Laura knew this and I didn’t. Good thing that wasn’t a trivial pursuit question or she might have won.

Laura is pretty much awesome. I had a good weekend -  here are some pictures to give you an idea.

(CLICKING ON PICTURES MAKES THEM BIGGER AND HIGHER QUALITY!)

Oh. This is Laura after Andy Roddick lost the US Opens. She was pretty much crying the whole day:

Picture 14.png

And this is on one of our many random walks to Walmart (Which is 1.5-2 miles away) We always pick up something very random when we get there… it’s tradition. This year was Teddy Grahams:

Picture 23.png

AND I think that Laura and “The Gift” look stunningly similar… eh!

Picture 24.png

Ok, Enough of that.

Now I guess I’ll give the yearly tour of my room. (I think my mom will like this…) My brother visited me when it was a huge mess, so this is also here to prove that the tornado did eventually lift up, and now our room is the best hang out place ever.

OUR KITCHEN

Picture 15.png

Haha. Our many shelves of food. The Most important part, of course.

Picture 16.png

Proudly displaying the German flag- three out of four of us are a good chunk of Germany-goodness. The other is canadian, and in her room is a Canada flag.

OUR BEDROOM!
______________________________________________________

This is the room that Laura and I share… and she occassionally locks me out of because she claims to be “tanning.” I don’t know about that girl sometimes…

Picture 20.png

Red bed is mine, blue is Laura. I get to use the walls as my personal color-artwork gallery. If you are at Dordt, stop by anytime to see it – admission is free. (haha! don’t expect much though, I’m only a blooming artist.)

Picture 21.png

More of my bedroom gallery. (Covenant HS friends can look for themselves in the pictures in the middle. I think about you guys everytime I see them :) )

Picture 22.png

And this is the ingenious curtain I designed to hide all our clothes. It’s hung up with tape and staples. I know, I’m so smart.
Also in this room are my two of my most favorite pieces of art I’ve ever made. First of all is the one that was my printmaking final (there is no way I could make this without the wonderful altruism of my friend, Elbert)

Picture 28.png

I named this piece “hourglass figure”. It’s a symbol of how I feel about time – ESPECIALLY during finals week.

(This is a LITHOGAPHY piece-  it is a very difficult process involving a very heavy stone, grease crayons, lots of chemical processes, lots of ink, and way too much time. I find that knowing how this was made adds appreciation to the artwork – so maybe google the Lithography process online and see what I had to go through to come out with this as the final result)

Next is my favorite piece EVER: (not a good photo,.. sorry)

Picture 27.png

It’s called “Cow-Pie”. Well… it’s a cow turning into a pie. Do I need to explain much more? THis was made with construction paper my freshman year of college.

Our “Multimedia Center!!!”

This is our beloved computer / tv / music / homework / black and white art gallery / all-around hang out room.

Picture 19.png

Yes, more ingenious tape and staple curtain hanging up (this time hiding all our boxes and suitcases)

and to the left is..

MY PLACE!!!

Picture 30.png

All my techno – geekiness in one little corner. And where I am sitting right now. I love this place. I love this computer.

Anyways.

OH! For the first time EVER, someone wants to buy my artwork!!! You don’t know how much of a boost that gives an artist, when someone sees something you did on a wall, and wants to spend money on it so they can see it some more!

Here is the piece: (please do click on this one to see it closer)
Picture 26.png

It is a small etching. I made it for someone (it wasn’t my original idea), but I felt like the person I made it for didn’t appreciate it. From there it kind of took on a new meaning – my very own.

This process is an ETCHING. Etchings involves a zinc plate, a lot of sanding, a lot of polishing, very strong acid, plenty of chemicals, and a lot of messy inking processes. I also suggest googling etching to further appreciate the effort that went into making this piece.

How much is it worth? No clue. There are only 4 editions of it. I gave one as a gift, one belongs to the school, and one is on my wall. One is left to sell.

Rachel also requested to take one of my prints (naturally family can have whatever art I make for free if I’m inclined to give it away). I hope she hung it up in her room. It looks like this:

Picture 31.png

This is the most soul I’ve ever put into a piece of artwork. I’ve never explained to anyone what it means… but NO – It’s not about Marraige. It’s name is “chained”. It is also an etching.

Welp – we also have a bathroom and my other roommates rooms, but I don’t feel the need to post those on my website.

If you happen to be around Dordt, PLEASE Come visit anytime!

ecm150.jpg

Yes. A cappuccino maker. I have one. It’s probably the most used piece of equiptment in my room (other than Fritz, of course). If you come over I’ll make you one.  I’m getting really good at it (I think I have one every day… MOM thanks SOO much for giving me it :) ).
Well anyways. I think I bored you enough and I have yet an article for the Diamond to write tonight. Do comment if anything in this post struck you as awesome, unsual, funny, boring, or whatever. I love hearing from the peanut gallery.

Take it easy, Y’all.

Graphic Design… me love.

Project: Create a promotional t-shirt for a typographer’s new font.

Time it took me: 50 minutes (including finding a typographer, and drawing the snowboarder)
Hand drawn snowboard dude (via graphics drawing pad).

Who wouldn’t want to wear that t-shirt? Seriously.

“New words for old desires…”

Random late-night doodlings. What I usually end up doing when my heart hurts:
I do this one a lot – i figured it is about time that I documented it in more permanent form:

Picture 1.png

This one sucks, but will be redone eventually (oh wait, they both suck):

Picture 2.png

Yeah, these are kind of crappy. All the quotes are in my favorite song “Left & Leaving” by the Weakerthans. But if you know me at all, you knew that already.

So I definately have developed a VERY distinctive style.
I’m planning to post a lot of my artwork this semester (the foremost reason I keep a blog is to look back later on in life and see my growth… including as an artist. Sorry that you all have to suffer for it).

Before the week ends, I will have pictures of my very first attempts at painting. They aren’t so completely awful.

Oh! And explodingdog.com does it again – yet another amazing drawing by Sam Brown:

thisiswhatiwasputonearthtod.gif

(What it says at top is “this is what i was put on earth to do”) That’s definately how I feel sometimes. If any of you have taken Design Theory or are currently taking it, this is probably how you feel about that class.

It made me chuckle.

Oh this is random and probably doctrinally unsound (feel free to yell at my seemingly primative understanding of God): but, you know how every person has their unique way of showing affection? Some use words, some gifts… and it goes on. My favorite way just happens to be physical. I’m finding it rather fustrating being a physical love-shower to a not so physical God…

yeah, so work with me here…I think that made sense.

Anyways, I should be off to bed. Evil 8 o’clock class tomorrow.
